The Ardenne Abbey is Reborn

A project that lasted 25 years led the French firm Opus 5 Architectes to completely renovate an ancient Norman abbey for cultural purposes

image

The Ardenne abbey is one of the three great Norman complexes founded by the Premonstratensian Canons Regular. Composed of well-made buildings built between the 13th and 18th centuries, the abbey was abandoned during the French Revolution, after which it was used for agricultural purposes and suffered serious damage during the second world war.

Acquired by the region of Normandy, the more than 9,000-square-meter complex was completely renovated by the Parisian firm Opus 5 Architecteswhich, after 25 years of work divided into three phases and at an overall cost of €17.6 million, turned it into the IMEC, Institut Mémoires de l’Edition Contemporaines (the Institute for Contemporary Publishing Archives).

Casa BL Umwelt

Chilean architecture firm Umwelt has constructed a wood house and a black cabin for a young family, on a property overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The project comprises two buildings, titled BL1 and BL2, on a spacious plot with no trees in central Chile. Umwelt designed the residences for a young family who moved from the capital Santiago to the beach town of Cáhuil, seeking a more natural lifestyle.

The main residence, BL1, measures 1,399 square feet (130 square metres) and comprises a two-storey addition to an existing bungalow – forming an L-shaped plan and creating a triangular outdoor patio in between. The older east-west wing blocks the south wind to shelter the terrace, while a pergola shades it from the sun.

At the Glenstone Museum, Hidden Facade Details Make a Big Impact f

image

Monumental walls of glass—each an insulated panel of 9 by 30 feet—ring the water court, relieving wide spans of light-gray cast-concrete blocks, the museum’s primary material. In a quiet act of daring, the glass doesn’t meet the poured-in-place floor and ceiling slabs where you might expect, but is held out at arm’s length. Above, each panel rises three and a half feet beyond the roofline to form a transparent guardrail for visitors traversing the at-grade landscaped roof, opening safe views onto the pool below.

Not so much of a question as a statement, but the preservation of the AT&T building exterior really lifted my spirits. Architects seem to be so quick to overwrite the designs of others in an effort to make their own "statements," supposedly on behalf of their clients. This was an important moment for our profession and it gives me hope.

Snøhetta’s Revised Proposal

I don’t know if I agree, Snøhetta’s revised its proposal for Philip Johnson’s postmodern tower in New York is plain boring, just like the original structure. Many structures in history have been changed, added to and adapted and after the initial furor calms down are embraced by most as a change for the better.

The Louvre’s Pyramid met initially with criticism and now its considered a Parisian Icon. Most people don’t know that the Guggenheim Museum had an major addition built in the 1990′s which received its fair share of criticism before being built (because it does look like the water tank of a toilet). Because now they have become part of the fabric of the building and the city.

On the flip side, NYC allows important architecture to be demolished like the recent example of the American Folk Art Museum designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects or the eternally-mourned Pennsylvania Station. Why this desperate need to save intact the AT&T Building facade then I ask?

please don't go. You're my number one source of inspiration! :)

Thanks!

Still considering the options. Not trying to be difficult but its tough for me to say goodbye to tumblr.

Traditional and Contemporary Japanese Culture Collides in Striking Photographs by RK

Tokyo-based photographer RK explores the far reaches of Japan, as well as neighboring Asian countries, shooting images that capture both timeless and of-the-moment scenes.  RK often includes signs of life in his landscape images, whether a fisherman casting a line beneath a vibrant Japanese maple tree, or a carefree skateboarder cruising down a paved road with Hokkaido looming in the distance. The photographer also highlights the densely-packed nature of life in Japan, from masses of commuters forming a sea of umbrellas to shop owners surrounded by huge selections of neatly organized inventory.

What’s the main difference between junior architects and architects and why would someone want junior architects better than architects? All that comes to my mind is exploitation, at least in the country I’m from.
Anonymous

Not sure where you are from and what kind of “exploitation” comes to your mind. But I would caution you about throwing words like that around when it is clear you don’t have a thorough understanding of the matters at hand (unless you just want to get attention, then by all means go for it).

ALL firms have a hierarchy, and if you are not the one signing and stamping drawings (and therefore assuming the financial and legal risk) you might be called a junior architect, others call them interns, unlicensed architects, architects in-training, etc. In this specific case I used junior architects referring to all architects under ten years of experience, licensed or not, looking for work on the DC area. The market is very hot and most firms are looking for new staff with this level of experience.

Right now the market for new architects is good… get your portfolio and resume ready and send them out to your preferred firms!

For architects right now? NO! It might change in six months but right now there is need for more junior architects. BUT the city is very expensive, do you research before considering a move here.

We got Tumblr’s attention with our past peaceful protest campaigns

  • Protect the Creators
  • Bring Back Reply
  • Protest against hate speech
  • Bring Back Arch Atlas

Maybe it is time we use our beloved Tumblr to protest this sexist policy that marks female nipples as porn. Tumblr is being extreme in what its decision and policies, and is using a useless algorithm that sees Rothko paintings (see @dailyrothko) and flowers and all kinds of non-porn images as porn.

So, on Monday, 12-17-18, we should not post anything on Tumblr, except the above photo, which is available here. NOTE: You can also add these to your avatar to let anyone who visits your site know about this.

As this post suggests, if we have a queue with images, we should add this one to 12-17-18. As part of our protest, we should not do anything on Tumblr for the whole day: no dashboard, no posts, no comments, chat, replies. We should also, as recommended by @jtmportland, we should also completely log out to show a physical drop in traffic/use.

Nothing on Tumblr, all day, M, 12-17-18. Even log out completely for the day so there is a drop in traffic/use.

Also, please think about putting @staff & @supporton any and all reblogs of this and any on any posts about this, since this will send them a direct notification of each and every post about this. We need to flood their dashboards so they see we are upset.

Also, please use the staff and support tags.
