Stunning new photos document I.M. Pei’s early Brutalist museum f

image

I.M. Pei, legendary designer of cultural and institutional architecture, designed his first-ever museum in downtown Syracuse, New York. Constructed in 1968, the 60,000-square-foot Everson Museum of Art was a brutalist building that broke the mold on traditional museum design.

As someone who engages with Tumblr for non "nsfw" content, such as your posts, and posts of other architecture and art blogs, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that you will still have a sizable audience on this platform. But also, if you decide to leave, I'll follow your content wherever you end up.

Thanks, much appreciated. tumblr is still, in my opinion, a great idea. We would not be as protective as we are of our community if it was not unique. What we all want is a better tumblr not a tumblr that penalizes some of its users, the same users that got tumblr to flourish. Half our art museums would be empty without “female presenting nipples” or art that was meant to challenge our views of the world (and art itself). I will keep you all posted but I will not make any decisions until after the 17th.

What 6 UK Cities Could Have Looked Like If Ambitious Architectural Plans Went Ahead

Cities are an inspiring playground for ambitious architects.   But ambitious ideas come with hefty price-tags and there’s always a political story to negotiate, too. Often, the most exciting ideas for buildings, bridges, and towers make it no further than the blueprint stage.   A creative team trawled the archives for forgotten ‘might-have-beens’ and used lost plans and schematics to bring unbuilt structures to life across some of the most famous cities in Britain.

What Bristol could have looked like

In 1864, Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge finally opened after 110 years of struggle. Bristol’s famous landmark could have looked very different.

Francisco Negroni’s Marvelous Volcanoes Pictures

Francisco Negroni is a world-known Chilean photographer that has won six international awards for his outstanding shots of erupting volcanoes. In 2011, he made himself known with his photos of the eruption of Cordon Caulle volcano in his home country. « I never really thought about becoming a volcano photographer. It came naturally. When I saw my first eruption with my own eyes in Chile, that’s when I knew I wanted to continue taking pictures of such explosions in my life », he reveals. Abandoned Houses In The Arctic By Norwegian Photographer Britt Marie Bye

Britt Marie Bye is a Norwegian photographer who for the past couple of years has been exploring above the Arctic circle in Norway and taking pictures of the abandoned houses she found there. Her pictures have an eerie sense of calmness and serenity to them and they’re just what you need to take your mind off the everyday stress of the city.

The Ardenne Abbey is Reborn

A project that lasted 25 years led the French firm Opus 5 Architectes to completely renovate an ancient Norman abbey for cultural purposes

image

The Ardenne abbey is one of the three great Norman complexes founded by the Premonstratensian Canons Regular. Composed of well-made buildings built between the 13th and 18th centuries, the abbey was abandoned during the French Revolution, after which it was used for agricultural purposes and suffered serious damage during the second world war.

Acquired by the region of Normandy, the more than 9,000-square-meter complex was completely renovated by the Parisian firm Opus 5 Architecteswhich, after 25 years of work divided into three phases and at an overall cost of €17.6 million, turned it into the IMEC, Institut Mémoires de l’Edition Contemporaines (the Institute for Contemporary Publishing Archives).

Casa BL Umwelt

Chilean architecture firm Umwelt has constructed a wood house and a black cabin for a young family, on a property overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The project comprises two buildings, titled BL1 and BL2, on a spacious plot with no trees in central Chile. Umwelt designed the residences for a young family who moved from the capital Santiago to the beach town of Cáhuil, seeking a more natural lifestyle.

The main residence, BL1, measures 1,399 square feet (130 square metres) and comprises a two-storey addition to an existing bungalow – forming an L-shaped plan and creating a triangular outdoor patio in between. The older east-west wing blocks the south wind to shelter the terrace, while a pergola shades it from the sun.

At the Glenstone Museum, Hidden Facade Details Make a Big Impact f

image

Monumental walls of glass—each an insulated panel of 9 by 30 feet—ring the water court, relieving wide spans of light-gray cast-concrete blocks, the museum’s primary material. In a quiet act of daring, the glass doesn’t meet the poured-in-place floor and ceiling slabs where you might expect, but is held out at arm’s length. Above, each panel rises three and a half feet beyond the roofline to form a transparent guardrail for visitors traversing the at-grade landscaped roof, opening safe views onto the pool below.

6architecture, design,

Not so much of a question as a statement, but the preservation of the AT&T building exterior really lifted my spirits. Architects seem to be so quick to overwrite the designs of others in an effort to make their own "statements," supposedly on behalf of their clients. This was an important moment for our profession and it gives me hope.

Snøhetta’s Revised Proposal

I don’t know if I agree, Snøhetta’s revised its proposal for Philip Johnson’s postmodern tower in New York is plain boring, just like the original structure. Many structures in history have been changed, added to and adapted and after the initial furor calms down are embraced by most as a change for the better.

The Louvre’s Pyramid met initially with criticism and now its considered a Parisian Icon. Most people don’t know that the Guggenheim Museum had an major addition built in the 1990′s which received its fair share of criticism before being built (because it does look like the water tank of a toilet). Because now they have become part of the fabric of the building and the city.

On the flip side, NYC allows important architecture to be demolished like the recent example of the American Folk Art Museum designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects or the eternally-mourned Pennsylvania Station. Why this desperate need to save intact the AT&T Building facade then I ask?

Snøhetta’s Original Proposal

please don't go. You're my number one source of inspiration! :)

Thanks!

Still considering the options. Not trying to be difficult but its tough for me to say goodbye to tumblr.
